24 Mar Apple Cider Vinegar – What’s All The Fuss?
Is it witchcraft and wizardry, or is there benefit to taking apple cider vinegar on a daily basis?
You may or may not have heard of people having a shot of apple cider vinegar first thing in the morning to kick off their day. There is much anecdotal evidence of health improvements and even a general increase in overall well-being from a daily practice like this. Scientific research, as usual, is a challenge due to the nature of food based research and people within the study possible not being totally compliant or following different diet plans alongside the trial. So, we encourage you to acknowledge some of the known benefits from the research and understand you are all different. Try it for yourself and see if you feel better incorporating this simple and quite tasty habit into your food routine…
It’s as easy as mixing 1-2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar (be sure to buy a ‘dirty’ or ‘murky’ looking apple cider vinegar in a glass bottle, as this contains the “mother” which is where all the goodness is, kind of like kombucha with the floaty bits. You can drink in a small glass of filtered water on an empty stomach when you wake/go to the kitchen to start your day (be sure to dilute it as it is quite acidic and may cause damage to your teeth or throat if used excessively and without dilution). Another option is to have a tablespoon in filtered water before each meal as it will help you to better digest meat and help keep sugar levels more balanced, or use it as a salad dressing with some oil, herbs and spices, or marinade/sauce for your fish or meat. I guess the options are endless, experiment with it and see what works best for you depending on what you’re eating that day.
Benefits:
- Helps increase insulin sensitivity after meals and improve blood sugar levels, dramatically decreasing glucose spikes after meals;
- Increases your production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, helpful for digesting and breaking down food before it enters your intestines to increase absorption of nutrients;
- May help to prevent cancer, but obviously not as a stand-alone protocol for prevention – it’s still important to follow a healthy lifestyle of eating balanced meals containing good quality real food options, like we recommend on The Chief Life Meal Plans, as well as keeping a consistent exercise regime, and the other 4 pillars of health we often mention (hydration, stress, mindset and getting sunshine/getting outdoors);
- May help to kill pesticides and bacteria found on fruit and veggies (10% vinegar, 90% filtered water solution, don’t use on berries or other delicate fruit).
So, there you have it… A straight-forward, yet quite effective and healthy, way to jazz up your day and give you and your digestion a zingy kick-start! Don’t forget to buy organic and murky for best results!
