17 Mar 5 Fatty Foods to Increase Brain Function
Did you know that foods containing fats can improve your brain function? In fact, our brains are composed of 60 percent fat. So, it doesn’t really come as a surprise that fuelling it with fats would make it function better. It’s said that a diet high in monounsaturated fats can also increase the body’s production of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in learning and memory. Recently, many studies are leading to evidence that indicates it might be possible to manipulate our dietary fat intake in order to treat or prevent disorders of cognitive function.
Without getting too crazy on the science, there are 3 dietary fats that are incredible for brain function.
– Saturated fat is one of the main components of brain cells;
– Polyunsaturated fats contain the essential fatty acids better known as Omega-3 and omega-6;
– DHA, which is a strain from omega-3.
On a side note, all of these fat sources have also been said to decrease depression, help improve conditions of bipolar disorder, ADHA and dementia
So, what foods can you eat to improve your brain function?
Walnuts and Pecans
Don’t you think they kind of look like the brain? They’re an incredibly rich source of unsaturated fats and vitamin E. Your body cannot produce unsaturated fats by itself, therefore it’s incredibly important that we include these in our diet. All nuts will give this effect; however, walnuts and pecans are optimal for the best outcome.
Fish, Specifically SALMON
Salmon is high in omega-3. Put away your fish oil pills and increase your volume of fish in your diet. Eating fish, specifically salmon, can help brain functions like memory and motor skills.
Olives or Olive Oils
Olives are an acquired taste. It’s the most commonly disliked food we get on our meal plan questionnaire from members on sign up. As an alternative, you can use olive oil (preferably extra virgin olive oil). It can help improve cognitive function.
MCT Oils or Coconut Oil
Coconut oils contain medium chain triglycerides (MCT) however you can also buy MCT as a supplement on its own. Both versions support fat loss and can help to rejuvenate and repair nerve function inside your brain.
Avocado
Avocado is full of micronutrients such as potassium and magnesium, both of which are great for blood pressure and relaxation. The monounsaturated fats in avocado promote blood flow to the brain. Making them a great source for most body parts. On a side note, avocados are great for fertility. Trying to have a baby? Increase your daily intake of avocado and you’ll increase your chances of falling pregnant.
By adding at least one of these fat sources per day to your food intake, you are bound to increase your brain cognition and function. Add all of them into your diet with a balanced level of macronutrients and your percentages and it will help to get rid of brain fog and increase productivity!
