I can’t help you if you won’t let me…

You may have heard the statement “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink”. This is often a quote I use when speaking to new or existing clients to help them understand that I can give the information and education, but at the end of the day you – the individual – get to choose whether you make the changes towards bettering your health and wellbeing or if you choose to stay doing what you’re doing.

We LOVE helping people optimise their performance, whether that’s by changing their food, working with them on their training or introducing some mindset work into their lives, we just really thrive off of helping people to be the best version of themselves they can be. In saying that, I love helping people who are committed and dedicated to the cause and WANT to or are READY to make the changes as that mental attitude towards changing habits is super important for long term success and can really help both you and the person you are working with to achieve the goal you’re setting out to achieve together.

The main focus of this blog article is to help you to ask yourself some important questions so you can establish which “Stage/Phase of Change” you’re currently in, and what it is you’re trying to achieve so you can assess if you’re READY to make some changes to get you closer to your goals. Are you aware of something that needs to change but you’re not ready yet? This would be the “contemplation” stage or phase. If you haven’t thought about it at all, you would be in the “pre-contemplation” phase. Knowing something needs to change and actively making a choice to start to do something about it is known as the “decision” phase.

My favourite stage, and where I know I will see most success, is people who are in the “action” phase – these are people who have decided to change and are already starting to implement some of these changes and just need a little more guidance and accountability along the way. We then have “relapse” – this is people who were taking “action”, but may have fallen off the wagon and might need a little kick up the bum to get back on track and revisit their “why” to reinforce the reasons behind what they’re doing, so they can reach their goals. The final phase is “maintenance”, which is where most of us will be happy living once we have achieved initial healthful change and are at peace with our mind, body and soul. This phase means we have achieved our long-term health goal and can find a good balance to continue to maintain a happy and healthy life.

The Chief Life have plenty of golden nuggets to share with you, and love helping people to be the best version of themselves they can be, but for you to get the most out of our service, you must be willing to take on the information and USE these golden nuggets of knowledge to take ACTION and get the gold medal (or silver or bronze depending on how committed to the cause you are, but at least aim for the podium)!

Once you know you stage of change, your short and/or long term goals, and the reasons WHY you’re working towards these, you’ll be able to work more closely with a nutritionist, trainer or health professional to get the most out of yourself and live the best life possible!
